What is the working principle of a self-priming pump?

As a self-priming pump starts, the impeller rotates to generate centrifugal force, which pulls a mixture of air and water into the pump body. The resulting vacuum lowers the presence inside the chamber below atmospheric pressure, causing external water to be drawn in. The impeller then accelerates the mixture and forces it out through the discharge pipeline.

How is a self priming pump used?

Here’s the drill for starting your self-priming pump for the very first time. First, give the coupling, bearing base, and motor a quick once-over. Then, open the inlet valve and put in enough liquid to fill at least two-thirds of the pump. Once that’s done, close the valve. When it’s running, the pump must turn clockwise as viewed from the motor end. NOTE: Priming with liquid is not necessary for subsequent start-ups.

What are the differences between a self-priming pump and a centrifugal pump?

A self-priming pump only requires an initial filling of the pump casing with liquid. A centrifugal pump requires manual priming of both the entire suction line and pump casing for each startup, unless equipped with an automated priming system. A self-priming pump only need a simple strainer at the lower end of the inlet, and there is no foot valve. Conversely, a centrifugal pump should be fitted with a foot valve or an auxiliary vacuum system to maintain priming.

Can self priming pumps run dry?

A quick heads-up on dry running: your self-priming pump can handle it for short bursts, but try to keep it under 30 minutes. During dry running, the rapid rotation of the impeller generates excessive heat due to high-speed friction, which can in turn damage components like the O rings, shaft seal, and bearings through thermal deformation. Frequent dry running also compromises the vacuum environment and significantly reduces pump lifespan.
