API 610 Pump for Petrochemical Applications: Engineering Features and Field Performance
OH2 Centerline-Mounted Pumps Supplied for a Refinery Upgrade Project
- API 610 Pump Standard and Industrial Applications
API 610 establishes internationally recognized requirements for centrifugal pumps used in petroleum, petrochemical, and natural gas industries, focusing on reliability, vibration control, long service life, and maintainability. It is widely applied in refinery and petrochemical processes involving critical and continuous-duty services. Typical applications include refinery units, petrochemical plants, and other high-demand process industries.
- Refinery Upgrade Project Background
A refinery modernization and upgrading project in Central Asia, with an annual crude oil processing capacity of approximately 7.5 million tonnes, involved a large-scale expansion of process units aimed at improving fuel quality to meet Euro IV standards.
The sulfur recovery project included systems associated with:
- Sulfur Recovery Unit (SRU)
- Sour Water Stripper (SWS)
- Amine Regeneration Unit (ARU)
These units handle H₂S-containing gas, ammonia-rich sour water, and corrosive process streams, creating demanding conditions for rotating equipment.
- Selection of API 610 OH2 Pumps for Critical Service
For these critical services, API 610 OH2 centerline-mounted pumps were selected due to their superior thermal stability, mechanical robustness, and suitability for continuous operation in refinery environments. Key advantages include improved shaft stability, reduced vibration levels, and high nozzle load tolerance, making them suitable for demanding process conditions.
- API 682 Plan 53A Sealing System
The pumps were equipped with API 682 Plan 53A pressurized barrier fluid systems for sour water and H₂S-containing services. Barrier fluid pressure is maintained above seal chamber pressure to ensure process containment and environmental safety. This configuration improves seal reliability, reduces leakage risk, and supports long-term stable operation in hazardous process environments.
- Engineering Design Features of API 610 OH2 Pumps
The pumps incorporate heavy-duty engineering features designed for refinery service. The bearing housing is constructed from cast steel and designed for high rigidity. Oil-cooled lubrication ensures uniform heat dissipation and improves bearing life. Rotor dynamics are designed in accordance with API 610 requirements, ensuring adequate critical speed margins for stable operation and low vibration.
The casing is designed to withstand high nozzle loads, with the pump capable of handling loads up to approximately 2–3 times the API 610 11th Edition allowable values, ensuring reliability under real piping stress conditions. In addition, the pump structure is engineered for extreme mechanical robustness, with casing strength capable of withstanding up to three times the API 610 specified limits.
For drainage and maintenance optimization, a low-point drain is provided at the suction-side inlet, and the nozzle extension length is limited to a maximum of 150 mm to improve drainage efficiency and maintenance accessibility.
Maintenance-friendly features such as low-point drainage and high-point venting simplify startup and shutdown operations.
- Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT)
Before shipment, the pumps were subjected to factory acceptance testing witnessed by the end user. The testing program included:
- Hydraulic performance testing
- Vibration measurement
- Noise testing
- Mechanical inspection
All contractual requirements were successfully achieved before equipment delivery. Customer participation in the testing process provided additional confidence that the pumps would perform as expected in refinery service.
- Field Performance in Refinery Operation
Following installation and commissioning, the pumps have been operating in the refinery’s sulfur recovery and sour water systems under continuous service conditions. They continue to meet operational requirements for vibration control, noise levels, hydraulic performance, and overall stability. The pumps have remained in reliable service since commissioning, with approximately nine years of field operation recorded as a service reference. Long-term operation confirms the suitability of API 610 OH2 design for refinery critical service applications.
- Why API 610 Pumps Are Preferred in Refineries
Refinery operators around the world continue to specify API 610 pumps because they provide:
- Proven reliability in critical process services
- Long equipment life
- Superior rotor dynamic performance
- Improved maintainability
- Enhanced safety when combined with API 682 sealing systems
- Reduced risk of unplanned shutdowns
- Engineering Support and Contact
YOUNAI provides engineered API 610 centrifugal pump solutions for refinery and petrochemical applications, including sulfur recovery, sour water treatment, hydroprocessing, and general process services.
All three types are designed for medium-flow, high-pressure services, but each services a distinct purpose. The BB5 is built for the most extreme pressures (e.g., in crude/vacuum distillation) and offers the greatest robustness and safety integrity. The BB4 is the most compact and cost-effective option, making it the most common choice for high-pressure applications like boiler feed water. The BB3 covers a wide range of duties, including lean methanol service, delivering very high pressure with the advantage of convenient maintenance. Not sure which one you need? Share your parameters with us, and we’ll recommend the right fit quickly.
