It is widely used for drainage and wastewater handling in applications such as deep wells, sumps, pits, and pumping stations. Its vertical design integrates the motor, pump volute casing, and impeller into a compact unit, with the sealed motor housed inside the upper cylindrical section and the hydraulic components located at the bottom.

Can a submersible centrifugal pump operate above the water level?

No. A standard submersible centrifugal pump is designed to operate only when fully submerged in the pumped liquid. The surrounding liquid cools the motor and mechanical seal, ensuring reliable and continuous operation. Running the pump dry, even for a short time, can cause overheating and damage to the motor and mechanical seal.

To prevent dry running, submersible centrifugal pumps can be equipped with a float switch, which automatically stops the pump when the liquid level drops below the preset minimum level. Additionally, the motor is IPX8-rated, providing reliable waterproof protection during continuous submerged operation.

What is automatic operation for a submersible centrifugal pump?

Automatic operation refers to the use of a float switch or other level control device to automatically start and stop a submersible centrifugal pump according to the liquid level. When the liquid rises to the preset start level, the pump starts automatically. When the liquid drops below the preset stop level, the pump shuts down automatically to prevent dry running.

This automatic level control helps protect the pump from damage caused by dry running while reducing maintenance requirements.
