Inside YOUNAI Mixed-Flow Pump Workshop

These on-the-spot photos from our workshops give you a complete 360° look at the superior craftsmanship quality of our mixed-flow pumps.

What is the working principle of a mixed flow pump?

During operation, the high-speed rotation of the mixed flow impeller forces the fluids to rotate and generates centrifugal force, throwing the fluids outward. Inside the volute diffusion chamber, the fluid decelerates, increasing its pressure before being discharged vertically upward through the discharge flange.

What are the types of mixed flow pumps?

The mixed-flow pump is a general concept in the pump manufacturing industry, categorized based on their characteristic of delivering large flow rates at medium heads. They can be subdivided into: Pull-out mixed flow pump, which is a large-scale pump designed for easier maintenance; Non pull out mixed flow pump, a smaller pump known for stable operation and high reliability; Guide vane mixed flow pump, with a higher specific speed; Axial mixed flow pump, with a lower specific speed; Adjustable blade mixed flow pump, where blades can be fully, semi-, or non-adjustable; Non-adjustable blade mixed flow pump, where blades are fixed. Horizontal mixed flow Pump, installed horizontally; Vertical mixed flow pump, featuring a long column and installed vertically.

Why are mixed-flow pumps suitable for a wide range of applications?

Mixed flow pumps Combine the larger mass flow rate of axial pumps with higher pressure of centrifugal pumps. They can convey clear liquids as well as two-phase flows containing hard particles; YOUNAI adopts the best hydraulic design and special materials to manufacture the mixed flow pump with excellent operational performance, challenging the previous limitations of corrosion resistance and wear resistance, and meeting the sever requirements of many applications for mixed flow pumps. There are no limits to installation options, with both horizontal mixed flow pumps and vertical mixed flow pumps available, and YOUNAI boasts extensive experience and many references in their design, customization, manufacturing, and installation.

A Comprehensive Guide: Mixed Flow Pump

A mixed flow pump with guide vanes is vertically installed, providing large capabilities, enhanced operational efficiency, minimal space requirements, and adjustable performance characteristics suitable for a wide range of applications. Mixed flow pumps are widely used in chemical industry, general industry, thermal power plants for circulating water transportation, agricultural irrigation and drainage, urban water supply and drainage, etc.

Structure of a vertical single-stage guide vane mixed flow pump:

Pump body components: suction, impeller, pump shaft, impeller casing, guide vane assembly, discharge, middle pipe, seal and couplings.

Suction : For small and medium-sized mixed flow pumps, the suction is designed as a bell-shaped; for the large mixed flow pump, it is an elbow-shaped or bell-shaped suction flow channel.

Impeller: The impeller is composed of parts of blades, impeller hub, guide cone and nuts.

Guide vane: The guide vane assembly is positioned above the impeller.

Pump shaft: made from high-carbon chromium steel to transmit torque to the impeller.

Discharge: Discharge section with an angled outlet direction relative to the inlet flow, also referred to as a diagonal flow pump. Standard discharge adopts a straight-pipe; The large-sized mixed flow pump should adopt a siphon-type outlet flow channel with a vacuum breaker valve.

Transmission parts: motor, coupling/ V-belts

For small and medium-sized mixed flow pumps, the transmission part adopts direct drive by a vertical motor. The vertical motor is installed on the motor base and connected to the transmission shaft through an elastic coupling. Bearings are lubricated with grease or oil. The transmission shaft is connected by rigid couplings. Optional V-belts are available for small mixed flow pumps.

Performance characteristics of mixed flow pumps:

High flow rate and medium head. The combined characteristic of centrifugal and axial forces within the impeller, guide vane, and flow channel enables efficient fluid propulsion.

Wide high-efficiency operation range. The Q-H curve and Q-η curve of mixed flow pumps are relatively flat and smooth, allowing stable operation with high efficiency over a wide range of flow rate variations. This adaptability makes it ideal for diverse applications.

superior cavitation resistance. Low NPSHr value requires a relatively lower suction liquid level height.

Widely applied fields:

Industrial circulating water, water conservancy projects, municipal drainage, flood control pumping stations, agricultural irrigation, marine water jet propulsion, wastewater treatment, industrial sewage treatment factory, circulating cooling water systems in power stations.

What is the function of the guide vane body in a mixed flow pump?

In mixed flow pumps, the guide vane plays a critical role, even being named after the alternate name “guide vane mixed flow pump”. Positioned directly after the impeller, its function is to transform the kinetic energy from the impeller’s high-speed output into pressure energy. Its fixed vanes guide the flow in a controlled direction into the discharge, reducing turbulent vortex  and swirl, thereby significantly lowering hydraulic losses.

What are the installation schemes for mixed flow pump?

We offer flexible installation options to match your space and piping needs. The position of the outlet flange of the mixed-flow pump can be adjusted upwards.

  1. The motor is mounted directly on the pump’s bearing unit and connected by a V-belts to limit the equipment footprint.
  2. A side-mounted arrangement where the motor and pump share common baseplate and are connected by V-belts, minimizing the footprint.
  3. The motor and pump are mounted on a common baseplate and connected by diaphragm couplings, which is the most common installation scheme. The mixed-flow pumps are pre-aligned at the factory. This type also allows for maintenance without pipe or motor disassembly.
  4. The motor is mounted on an overhead bracket behind the pump and connected by V-belts, saving floor space.
What are the installation arrangements for vertical mixed flow pump?
  1. Double foundation arrangement: The pump’s base plate and the motor’s base plate are fixed on two separate foundation levels;
  2. Can-type arrangement: The pump is submerged in a canister or in a deep sump or pit, and the buoyant force of the liquid partially counteracts the pump’s own weight;
  3. Inclined arrangement: The vertical mixed flow pump is set at a certain angle to the horizontal plane, used for special cases where the pump column is very long. As vertical mixed flow pumps are all customized according to the site conditions for each application, we are committed to delivering reliable fluid transfer solutions with a design tailored to your specific requirements.
