What is a progressive cavity pump?
A Progressive Cavity Pump is a typical rotary positive displacement pump, consisting of two primary components: the helical stator and the helical rotor. The metallic rotor rotates slowly within the rubber stator, pushing the fluids out of the cavity within the stator. The flow conveying process is steady and gentle, ensuring low pulsating and low shear, especially when handling high-viscosity media.

Composed of universal pin joint, intermediate shaft, and universal joint seal. This unit bears the eccentric torque generated by the pump rotor and the axial thrust from the drive shaft. The universal joint seal protects the internal components from contact with the media and retains the lubricant within.
Absolutely not. In a progressive cavity pump, the pumped media is essential for lubricating the close-tolerance fit between the metallic stator and rotor. Dry running quickly leads to excessive heat buildup and rapid stator failure. For applications with poor fluidity of the medium that can lead to an empty line, we recommend a dry-running protector. This device will automatically shut down the equipment and trigger an alarm.
Progressive cavity pumps are ideal for coal water slurry (CWS) for two key reasons. 1. CWS is a mixture of coal fines, water, and a certain amount of additives, which aligns perfectly with the pump’s capability to handle multiphase mixtures. 2. During the transportation of CWS, it is necessary to avoid the formation of soft precipitates and stratification. The pump’s constant cavity volume and gentle, non-pulsating flow keep the mixture in suspension to avoid agitation. This process also aids in the homogenizing (“aging”) of the slurry. Therefore, progressive cavity pumps are well-suited for coal water slurry transfer.
Progressive cavity pumps are suitable for handling viscous mixtures. they deliver a constant flow despite variations in viscosity and pressure, and have a low failure rate. Progressive cavity pumps are widely used in the petroleum industry for applications such as crude oil extraction, crude oil transfer, hydrocarbon sludge, and catalyst slurry handling. YOUNAI’s progressive cavity pumps are manufactured in full compliance with the API 676 standard and are extensively utilized in oil and gas processing, refineries, and other petroleum industry applications.
Reversible operation, allowing the sealed end to serve as either the medium suction end or the discharge end. The discharge port is flexible, with three options available to meet different needs of customers. Progressive cavity pump simplifies piping via flanges. The suction flange has three mounting orientations: vertically up, horizontal left, or horizontal right.
Due to its unique helical structure, the rotor and stator fit tightly to create an effective seal, enabling the progressive cavity pump to self-prime. No need for a foot valve or other devices in the suction line, while still delivering strong self-priming performance, with a maximum suction height of up to 6 meters.
